Module #2: The Art of Doing – Blueprint

Just Do It.

Arguably, this is the most popular marking slogan of all time. Nike has created thousands of commercials, advertising campaigns, billboards, and clothing lines with this slogan on it. As a creative, this is something we need to tattoo on our bodies, make our desktop backgrounds, or write on our mirrors.

My favorite thing about collaborating with Noah is his appetite for doing. It’s his secret sauce. I think we all have met people who like to talk about doing, but never actually do anything.

Here is what happens with Noah. We have an idea, we decide its awesome, (or at least pretty cool) and we get started. With Noah University, as soon as we had a name we had people working on a logo, domains bought, and dates put on the calendar for when we would launch and when enrollment would start.

Plan along the way.

Start moving. Plan along the way. I love the Bible story of Abraham, God told him to go, and he went. He started moving forward and got directions along the way.

Amazing things happen along the way while you are doing. We are living in a time where the Beta test never ends. What we create can evolve along the way. In no other time, in history, has that been possible. Think about the iPod; the first one was not great, but got the idea out there. The second one was a little better. The current one makes the first one seem terrible.

Capture.

Evernote. That’s all. We are going to be doing a video soon for you guys letting you know how we use it. Every idea I have heads to Evernote to grow.

Prime example: last night my dog thought 3am would be a great time to go outside and pee, so that meant I was up and had an idea. Rather than that idea keeping me up the rest of the night, I put the idea went into Evernote. It will end up being in the book. But rather than having to write 1000 words at 3 am. I put down 10 — enough to help me find my way back to the idea later.

It doesn’t matter how awesome your ideas are unless you cage them so you can unleash them when it’s time.

Execute.

In the dictionary, the word execute has a few meanings. 1. to do something. 2. to kill something.

I want to camp on the idea of killing it. As a creative, we need to embrace that idea. I love to stand by when a friend “kills it” or just blows it up. In order for me to be able to cheer they had to silence the voices that scream no. They had to slay the beast of fear. The virus of perfection had to be beaten.

Action breeds ideas. Creating comes easier when you are working. The future is clearer when you are engaged in the present. I love dreaming. I love brainstorming, but doing is way better.

So this week, your task is to kill it. Finish it. Do it. Now!

Here is your starting point.
